User counters provide a means to implement instore numbering schemes, such as the allocation of personal sale numbers, batch numbers, edit numbers or any other system where a unique number is required to be allocated and the POS generated sale numbers cannot be used.

User counters are implemented as a hard total, but each time the user counter hardtotal is read, it also increases the value, so that the next read will return the next value in the sequence.
